Surviving Monsoon Season in Arizona
A monsoon is a seasonal change and dramatic shift in weather that suppresses hot summer temperatures and delivers intense rain, large hail, powerful winds and even lightning. Residents of Arizona know the dangers and destruction of monsoon season all too well. In the Valley, monsoon season begins mid-June and ends late September. During the months of the monsoon, Arizona receives about half of the state’s total annual rainfall. While this time is vital to desert dwellers and wildlife, it brings a number of hazards to residents of Arizona.
Take a look at our tips for surviving monsoon season and staying safe!
Prepare Your Home:
Your home is your first line of protection against dangerous monsoon conditions. To prevent water from entering through doors and windows, make sure frames are water tight and well sealed. It is also a good idea to wrap plastic around outdoor electricity boards and connections to avoid electrical fires.
Disaster Supply Kits:
No matter the season, you should always have a disaster supply kit in your home in case of emergencies. Some essential items to include in the kit are water, first aid supplies, food, portable flashlights and extra batteries. With monsoon season, you never know how long electricity, gas or water services may be interrupted so it’s best to prepare for up to three days.
Monsoon weather brings slippery roads, gusty winds, dust storms, flooded highways and overall poor visibility on the roads. To stay safe this monsoon season, we recommend you slow down, don’t drive in flooded areas, and avoid driving in dangerous conditions if possible.
