We all see pigeons and other birds sitting on roof's all the time, but what kind of damage can they really cause? In one word......plenty!
Birds perching on a roof can cause damage to the roof membrane weather it be shingle, tile or flat roofing. Droppings on roof tiles will cause the tiles to discolor, this is the least amount of damage caused to the three types of roofing we will mention.
Dropping from birds on shingles can cause granular loss on on shingle roofs. The granular and or asphalt loss is the result of the degrading of the asphalt by bird feces.
Birds tend to like to nest in and under things and tile roofs make the perfect place. But birds can cause damage to the underlayment. The underlayment of a tile roof is the roofing membrane and if torn it will cause the roof to leak.
The third type is a flat roof, a flat roof can have many types of membranes. However, regardless of the type of system flat roofs make a very easy place for birds to nesting and perching. Under coolers, solar panels, satellite dishes and other mechinicals on the roof provide shady cool spots. But as with the other type of roofing systems birds and their feces will damage the roofing system.
There are many ways to prevent birds from perching or nesting on a roof. One of the easiest, most cost effective ways are pigeon or bird spikes. These plastic spikes are easy to install and are relatively inexpensive. Another way is bird repellent discs or scare tape which is a holographic and reusable tape. Whatever way you choose keeping birds off your roof will prevent them from damaging your roof and causing costly repairs.
Another way to stop birds from nesting under tiles is to use bird blocking. This will stop the birds from entering under the tiles and nesting there. However, it will also prevent the roof from ventilating effectively so other ventilation methods may be needed.
